Visa-Free Entry To Ghana: What African Nationals Need to Know

by [email protected]

Ghana has progressively expanded its visa-free access framework as part of its broader Pan-African and diaspora engagement strategy, granting unconditional visa-free entry to nationals of approximately 23 countries including South Africa, Jamaica, Kenya, Rwanda, and Singapore. Holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports from an additional set of countries, including Germany, India, and the UAE, also qualify for visa-free entry under existing bilateral agreements. This policy signals Ghana’s commitment to reducing friction for the African diaspora and regional travelers, though visitors from the United States, Canada, and most of Europe still require either a pre-approved visa on arrival or an e-visa.

A complete and accurate guide to Ghana’s visa policy for African travellers, diaspora members, and international visitors.

Ghana has long positioned itself as the gateway to Africa, welcoming diaspora members, investors, tourists, and travellers from across the continent and the world. In a landmark move that takes effect on May 25, 2026 (Africa Day), Ghana will extend visa-free entry to all African nationals, marking a significant step towards Pan-African unity and the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Whether you are planning a visit, exploring relocation, or conducting business, this guide sets out exactly what you need to know about Ghana’s visa entry requirements based on official information from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

Ghana’s Visa-Free Entry Policy: What Is Changing

From May 25, 2026, citizens of all 54 African nations will be able to enter Ghana without the need for a pre-arrival visa application or embassy fee. This new policy removes a longstanding barrier for African travellers and reflects Ghana’s commitment to continental integration.

However, it is important to understand that visa-free does not mean documentation-free. Under the new framework, African travellers will still be required to apply for a free e-visa through a dedicated online platform before travel. This step exists to maintain border security and standard screening processes. All travellers must also continue to meet the following entry requirements:

  • A valid passport with sufficient validity for the duration of the intended stay
  • A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, which is a standard health requirement for entry into Ghana
  • Compliance with standard security screening at the port of entry

A visa under this policy is an authorisation to travel and present yourself for entry into Ghana. It is not a guarantee of entry, as final admission remains subject to the assessment of the Immigration officer at the point of entry.

Countries Already Exempt from Ghana Visa Requirements

A number of countries already enjoy visa-free entry to Ghana under existing bilateral and regional agreements. Citizens of these countries do not need to apply for a visa in advance and may enter Ghana subject to standard immigration conditions.

ECOWAS Member States

All citizens of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member nations currently enjoy visa-free entry to Ghana for stays of up to 90 days. This includes Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and all other member states.

Other African Countries with Existing Visa-Free Access

The following African countries already have visa-free arrangements with Ghana, typically for stays of 60 to 90 days:

  • Kenya
  • South Africa
  • Rwanda
  • Tanzania
  • Uganda
  • Zimbabwe
  • Malawi
  • Botswana

Non-African Countries with Visa-Free Access

Citizens of the following countries also benefit from existing visa-free arrangements with Ghana:

  • Singapore
  • Barbados
  • Bahamas
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Mauritius
  • Jamaica
  • Guyana
  • Grenada
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

For the most current and complete list of visa-exempt countries, always consult the official Ghana Immigration Service website or your nearest Ghanaian diplomatic mission before travelling.

Types of Visas Issued in Ghana

According to the Ghana Immigration Service, visas are divided into two broad categories: those issued at Ghana’s 56 diplomatic missions abroad, and those issued within Ghana itself. Visas issued abroad cover single or multiple journeys for periods between six months and five years. Visas issued within Ghana include the following:

Transit Visa

A transit visa is required if you are passing through Ghana on the way to another destination. It allows for a short stay in Ghana during an international journey.

Emergency Entry Visa

Where a traveller arrives at the border without a visa, an Immigration officer has the authority to grant an Emergency Entry Visa subject to prescribed conditions and any additional conditions the officer may impose.

Visa on Arrival

The Visa on Arrival is available to eligible travellers under specific conditions. It is important to note that this is not a walk-in service at the airport. Ghana’s Visa on Arrival now requires pre-approval from the Ghana Immigration Service before you board your flight. Arriving without this pre-approval may result in your airline refusing to allow you to board, or being denied entry upon landing.

For full details on eligibility and the step-by-step application process, visit our dedicated Ghana Visa on Arrival page.

Re-Entry Visa

A re-entry visa is issued to visitors already in Ghana who need to leave temporarily and return to the country within the permitted period of their existing permit.

Who Is Eligible for the Visa on Arrival

The Ghana Visa on Arrival is intended for travellers who face genuine barriers to obtaining a visa through a Ghanaian embassy or consulate in advance. According to the Ghana Immigration Service, you may be eligible if:

  • You are travelling from a country that does not have a Ghanaian embassy or consulate
  • You need to travel at short notice and cannot wait for standard embassy processing times
  • You are visiting for a conference, urgent business meeting, or family matter
  • Your visit is formally supported by an individual or organisation based in Ghana who is willing to act as your sponsor and submit the application on your behalf

African Union nationals who are not currently covered by visa-free arrangements may currently obtain a 30-day Visa on Arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, subject to the payment of applicable fees and meeting the eligibility criteria.

The Visa on Arrival is not guaranteed. The Ghana Immigration Service retains the right to deny entry if requirements are not met or if the traveller is deemed ineligible.

Documents Required for the Visa on Arrival

To obtain a Visa on Arrival, the following documents are typically required. These are submitted by your host or sponsor in Ghana to the Ghana Immigration Service Headquarters in Accra before your travel date:

  • A valid passport with at least six months validity remaining
  • A formal application letter from your host or sponsor in Ghana, addressed to the Comptroller-General of Immigration
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking or host invitation letter
  • A return or onward flight ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay
  • A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate
  • Biodata pages of both the host and the visiting person
  • For business visits: company registration documents, tax clearance certificate, and certificate to commence business

Once approved, the Ghana Immigration Service issues an Approval Letter for Visa on Arrival. You must carry this letter, along with your valid passport and vaccination certificate, when boarding your flight. Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport, present these documents, complete the visa form, and pay any applicable fees to receive your 30-day single-entry visa stamp.

Important Notes for All Travellers

  • A visa is not a guarantee of entry. Final admission to Ghana is always subject to the assessment of the Immigration officer at the point of entry.
  • Standard conditions apply. Even visa-exempt travellers must meet health requirements, carry a valid passport, and pass security screening.
  • Pre-approval is mandatory for Visa on Arrival. You cannot arrive and request a Visa on Arrival without prior GIS approval. Your host must apply before your travel date.
  • Extensions are possible. If you are already in Ghana and wish to stay longer than your permitted period, you may apply to the Ghana Immigration Service for an extension of your visitor’s permit.
  • Long-term stays require a residence permit. If you intend to stay in Ghana for longer than 30 days after a Visa on Arrival, you must apply for a Residence Permit through the Ghana Immigration Service.
