Filling in a form for Ghana and not sure what to write in the address box? You are not alone. Many diasporans get stuck here. This guide gives you a clear residential address example, the right format, and a simple way to find your GhanaPost GPS code.
What Is a Residential Address?
A residential address is the place where you live. It is your home, not your office and not a post office box.
In Ghana, a full residential address often has two parts. The first part is the plain address, like your house number, street name, and area. The second part is your GhanaPost GPS code, also called your digital address. Many forms now ask for both.
Residential Address vs Digital Address
These two are not the same thing. Your residential address says where you live in words. Your digital address is a short code that points to the exact spot on a map.
Think of it this way. The residential address helps a person find your street. The digital address helps them find your gate. Read our full guide on residential address vs digital address in Ghana to see how they differ.
Example of a Residential Address in Ghana
Here is a simple example you can copy and change to fit your own home.
Kwame Mensah
House No. 12, Abelemkpe Street
Near the Total Filling Station
Abelemkpe, Accra
Greater Accra Region
Ghana
Digital Address: GA-183-8164
Note that the name, street, and code above are only a sample. Replace each line with your own details.
Here is what each line means:
- Name: Your full name as it appears on your passport or Ghana card.
- House number and street: Your house number and the road you live on.
- Landmark: A known place nearby. This helps because many streets in Ghana have no name or no sign.
- Area and city: The neighborhood and the town or city.
- Region: One of Ghana’s regions.
- Digital address: Your GhanaPost GPS code.
What Does a GhanaPost GPS Code Look Like?
A GhanaPost GPS code is made of letters and numbers. It follows this pattern: two letters, then three numbers, then four numbers.
Example: GA-183-8164
Here is how to read it:
- The first letter shows the region. In GA, the G stands for Greater Accra.
- The second letter shows the district. In GA, the A stands for the Accra district.
- The three numbers show the area.
- The last four numbers are the unique address of that spot. GhanaPost GPS gives a code to every 5 metre by 5 metre square in the country.
Residential Address Format by Region
The format stays the same in every region. Only the letters at the start of the code change. Here are three sample addresses to show this. The codes are samples, so use your own.
Greater Accra
House No. 12, Abelemkpe Street, Abelemkpe, Accra, Greater Accra Region
Digital Address: GA-183-8164
Ashanti
Plot 24, Adum Road, Adum, Kumasi, Ashanti Region
Digital Address: AK-039-5028
Central
House No. 8, Main Street, Cape Coast, Central Region
Digital Address: CP-078-2542
If you live in a village or a new estate, add a clear landmark. A school, church, or junction works well.
How to Find Your GhanaPost GPS Code
You can find your code in a few easy ways.
- Download the GhanaPostGPS app. It is free on the App Store and Google Play.
- Turn on your phone location.
- Stand at the gate of your home. Do not stand inside the compound or across the road.
- Open the app and tap the button to get your address.
- Wait for the code to appear. Check the colour. Green means your reading is accurate. Yellow or red means you should wait a little and try again.
- Save the code in your phone and send it to yourself so you always have it.
You can also check the front wall of your building. Some buildings already show their code there. Another option is to visit a Ghana Post office and ask for help.
Not in Ghana yet? Ask a family member or your landlord to get the code for you. They can do it at the property.
Where You Will Need Your Residential Address
You will be asked for it in many places, such as:
- Visa and resident permit applications. Read how your code fits in here: GPS digital address for a Ghana visa.
- Ghana Card registration
- Bank account opening
- Delivery and ride apps
- Company registration
If you plan to stay long-term, you will also need proof of where you live. A tenancy agreement is the usual proof. Our guide on the dual citizenship and resident permit process explains the full list of documents.
Common Mistakes on Forms
Avoid these mistakes. They are the main reasons forms get sent back.
- Writing only your digital address. Some forms need the full address in words too.
- Writing only “near the church” or “behind the school”. Add your house number and street.
- Using a code from the wrong spot. Always get the code at your own gate.
- Mixing up letters and numbers. Check that you wrote it as two letters, three numbers, and four numbers.
- Leaving out the hyphens. Write the code as GA-183-8164.
- Using a PO Box as your residential address. A PO Box is a mailing address, not a place where you live.
- Using your overseas address when the form asks for your address in Ghana. Read each form with care.
Quick Tips for Diasporans
- Keep a note on your phone with your full address and your GPS code.
- Ask your landlord to confirm the code before you sign any form.
- Use the same address on every form. Different addresses can cause delays.
- When in doubt, ask the office that gave you the form which address they want.
