Ghana is launching its national e-visa portal on May 25, 2026, marking the first time most visa applications were processed online. But not every application is approved instantly, and technical issues or processing delays can leave travelers in a difficult position as departure dates approach.
For those who cannot secure a visa through an embassy or consulate in time, Ghana’s Visa on Arrival (VoA), officially referred to by the Ghana Immigration Service as the Emergency Entry Visa, remains an available route. However, the process has changed significantly in recent years, and travelers who rely on outdated information risk being denied boarding before they even reach Ghana.
The Most Important Change You Need to Know
Ghana no longer issues visas spontaneously at the airport. As of 2025, the Ghana Immigration Service introduced a mandatory pre-approval requirement for all Visa on Arrival applicants. This means you must have official authorization from the GIS before you board your flight. Airlines check for this approval at check-in. Without it, you can be denied boarding regardless of your other travel documents.
The old model of walking up to an immigration counter at Kotoka International Airport and applying on the spot is no longer in operation. Treating the Visa on Arrival as an on-demand airport service is one of the most common reasons travelers are turned away.
Who Is Eligible for the Visa on Arrival
The Visa on Arrival is not available to all travelers. According to the Ghana Immigration Service, the following categories of travelers may be eligible:
- Travelers coming from countries where there is no Ghanaian embassy or consulate. This is the primary intended use case for the VoA.
- Business or emergency travelers who need to enter Ghana on short notice and do not have sufficient time to complete the standard embassy visa process.
- Foreign nationals invited by Ghanaian organizations, companies, or individuals who will act as the sponsor and submit the application on the traveler’s behalf.
It is important to note that the VoA is governed by Section 6 of Ghana’s Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), which gives immigration officers the right to verify the purpose of your visit and request supporting documentation. Approval is not guaranteed even if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Travelers who do not fall into these categories are expected to apply for a visa through a Ghanaian embassy or consulate or, since the May 2026 launch, through the national e-visa portal.
Who Does Not Need a Visa at All
Before beginning a VoA application, confirm that you actually need a visa to enter Ghana. As of January 2025, all African passport holders from the 54 African Union member states can enter Ghana visa-free. ECOWAS nationals have been able to enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days for many years. From May 25, 2026, ECOWAS, African Union, and Caribbean nationals are eligible for a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) through the new portal rather than a standard paid visa.
If you hold an African passport, check your current status with the Ghana Immigration Service before starting a VoA application, as you may not need one.
How the Pre-Approval Process Works
The pre-approval process for the Ghana Visa on Arrival is managed through a sponsor in Ghana, not by the traveler directly. Here is how it works:
- A person or organization in Ghana must act as your sponsor. This does not have to be someone you personally know. Hotels, licensed tour operators, event organizers, business partners, and private individuals can all serve as sponsors.
- The sponsor submits a formal application letter addressed to the Comptroller General of Immigration at the Ghana Immigration Service Headquarters, 42 Independence Avenue, Cantonments, Accra.
- The letter must state the traveler’s full name, nationality, passport number, planned travel dates, intended length of stay, purpose of visit, and accommodation details.
- For business travel, the application should include supporting documents on company letterhead, including the company’s contact information and the nature of the visit.
- The GIS reviews the submission and, if approved, issues an official pre-approval letter or approval PDF.
- The traveler must carry this approval document when presenting at airline check-in and again on arrival at Kotoka International Airport.
Processing time depends on the completeness of the documents and current GIS workload. Applications should be submitted as early as possible. Leaving this to the day before travel is not advisable.
Documents to Carry When Traveling
Even with pre-approval secured, travelers must arrive at check-in and at the border with the correct documents. The following are required:
- The official GIS pre-approval letter or PDF, printed and accessible on your phone as a backup
- A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity from your date of entry and at least two blank pages
- A confirmed return or onward flight ticket
- Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking confirmation or a host invitation letter
- A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. This is mandatory for all travelers over nine months of age entering Ghana and may be checked by health officials at the airport
- Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay. Immigration officers may ask for this
- Two recent passport-sized photographs
What Happens at Kotoka International Airport
Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra with your pre-approval letter, the process at immigration typically takes between 15 and 45 minutes when all documentation is in order. You will present your approval letter, passport, and vaccination card at the visa-on-arrival counter, complete a visa form, and have your visa endorsed in your passport. The standard VoA grants a 30-day single-entry stay.
If you intend to stay longer than 30 days, you will need to apply for a residence permit or an extension through the Ghana Immigration Service after arrival. The VoA itself cannot be extended once issued.
If Your Sponsor Cannot Get Pre-Approval in Time
If your departure is imminent and your sponsor has not been able to secure pre-approval, contact the Ghana Immigration Service Headquarters directly. The GIS can be reached at +233 (0)302 224 445 or through their official website at gis.gov.gh. In some cases, processing can be expedited for genuine emergencies, but this is not guaranteed.
If the e-visa portal is accessible, you should also attempt to apply through evisa.immigration.gov.gh, as the online system is designed for faster processing than the embassy route for eligible applicants.
A Note on African Passport Holders After May 2026
With Ghana’s new pan-African entry policies taking effect from May 25, 2026, the Visa on Arrival is becoming less relevant for African passport holders. If you hold a passport from an African Union member state, you are now eligible to enter Ghana without a visa or, for a more formal pre-authorization, through the free ETA on the official portal. The VoA with its pre-approval requirement and associated fees is now primarily intended for travelers from outside Africa who face genuine access difficulties in getting a visa before departure.
Always verify your specific nationality’s current entry requirements directly with the Ghana Immigration Service at gis.gov.gh before making travel arrangements, as policies are actively evolving.
