Standing Against Xenophobia: A Commitment to African Unity

by Kwame Okyere Darko

At Diaspora Affairs Ghana (DAGh), we categorically condemn the recent wave of xenophobic violence targeting African migrants in South Africa. We believe that such actions undermine the core principles of Pan-African solidarity, mutual respect, and the shared vision of a borderless, unified continent. DAGh stands firmly with our brothers and sisters affected by these events, advocating for their safety, dignity, and the protection of their fundamental rights.

Ghana’s Proactive Response

The Government of Ghana has taken decisive, swift action to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens:

  • Diplomatic Engagement: Ghana has activated high-level diplomatic channels, summoning South African authorities to express deep concern and demand accountability.
  • Travel Advisory: A formal advisory has been issued to all Ghanaian citizens, urging them to avoid non-essential travel to South Africa until the security situation is fully stabilized.
  • Voluntary Repatriation: In a commitment to protecting its own, the government has successfully facilitated the voluntary evacuation and safe return of hundreds of Ghanaians, providing them with necessary support and reintegration assistance upon arrival.
  • International Advocacy: Ghana has formally raised the issue with the African Union to ensure collective regional action against these attacks.

Assurance to the Diaspora in Ghana

To our diaspora community currently in Ghana: rest assured that Ghana remains a peaceful, welcoming, and safe environment. Your decision to reconnect with your heritage is supported by a government and a local population that values your presence and contribution. You should not worry about:

  • Safety and Social Harmony: Ghana maintains a stable and hospitable environment. The xenophobic tensions seen elsewhere do not reflect the values or the climate of our nation.
  • Supportive Infrastructure: DAGh and the state provide robust frameworks to assist your transition, ensuring you have the legal and social security necessary to thrive.
  • Cultural Acceptance: You are home. The spirit of hospitality remains a cornerstone of Ghanaian society, ensuring that you can pursue your personal and professional goals with peace of mind.

We remain dedicated to building a secure, prosperous home for every member of our global diaspora.
